Here's Why This Leadership Change Matters for Nigeria's Financial Markets.

First, what is FMDQ? It's Nigeria's over-the-counter financial market; think of it as the place where banks, pension funds, and big institutions trade bonds, treasury bills, and other financial instruments. Unlike the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) where stocks are traded, FMDQ focuses on debt and currency products. It's a major part of Nigeria's financial system.

FMDQ has appointed Zeal Akaraiwe as its new Group CEO. He replaces Bola Onadele. Koko, who retired after 12 years as the pioneer CEO.

Why This Matters.

First, Koko's 12-year tenure transformed FMDQ from a new experiment into a key institution. When he started, the over-the-counter market was underdeveloped. By the time he left, FMDQ had become essential — handling trillions of naira in transactions annually. As I said in an earlier post on LinkedIn, FMDQ recorded N249 trillion in turnover between January and April 2026 alone. That's the institution Koko built.

Second, Akaraiwe is a financial markets veteran. He's not learning on the job. His appointment signals continuity, not disruption. Regulators have already approved the move, so there's no uncertainty about his authority.

Third, leadership transitions at systemically important institutions matter for everyone, not just traders. FMDQ's stability affects pension funds (where your retirement savings are invested), banks (where your deposits sit), and ultimately the cost of government borrowing (which affects taxes and spending).

What This Means For You.

If you're an investor in bonds or treasury bills, this change likely won't affect your daily experience. FMDQ will continue operating as before.

If you're a business owner, FMDQ's health matters because it affects how easily banks can raise capital and manage liquidity, which influences how easily you can get a loan.

My take.

Leadership changes at financial institutions can be risky. New CEOs sometimes change strategy, alienate clients, or lose key staff. But Akaraiwe's appointment looks like a safe pair of hands. Experienced, approved by regulators, stepping into a well-built platform.

The real test will be in 12-24 months: will FMDQ continue growing, innovating, and serving Nigeria's financial markets? Or will the transition cause a slowdown? Initial signs are positive.

Do you invest in bonds, treasury bills, or other FMDQ-traded instruments? How has your experience been?
